GUIDE · BLEEDING GUMS
There’s blood in the sink when you brush. It isn’t just because you’re brushing too hard.
Bleeding gums usually means they’re inflamed, usually caused by bacterial plaque building up on the gum line. There’s somewhere in your mouth where this is happening every day. It’s those tight gaps where two teeth press together, where your toothbrush has never once been.
Five signs it’s starting between your teeth
You’ve probably started brushing a certain spot more gently, because it bleeds. It keeps bleeding anyway. Do you recognise any of these signs?

There’s blood in the sink, or on the brush, most mornings.

Your gums look red and puffy at the edge instead of light pink and firm.

One spot between your back teeth always traps food.

You wake up with a metallic taste in your mouth.

Your breath goes off by the middle of the day.
WHY IT HAPPENS
Your toothbrush doesn’t fit where two teeth touch
A bristle is wider than the gap between two teeth that are pressed against each other. It doesn’t matter how good the brush is or how carefully you use it. It doesn’t go in.
So bacterial film, or plaque, builds up in that gap and stays there. The rest of your mouth gets cleaned twice a day. That gap doesn’t get cleaned at all.
Your gum reacts to plaque that sits on it. It swells, it goes red, and it bleeds as soon as anything touches it. That’s what the blood in the sink is.
Then it gets worse, because of what people do next. The spot bleeds, so you brush it more gently or just avoid it. The plaque sits there even longer, and gum disease might even set in.
Leave it long enough and the inflamed gum starts shrinking away from the tooth. Your teeth get exposed and look longer, gaps open up between them, and the bone holding them in begins to weaken. By now, your teeth might be loose and in danger of falling out.
Clean that gap every day and the gum usually settles within a few weeks. A simple step that can change everything.
Why brushing more, or more gently, doesn’t stop it
✕ Brushing that spot more gently
This is the one that makes it worse. The gum bleeds because plaque is sitting on it. Brush it less and the bacteria sit there longer.
✕ Brushing three times a day
Same brush, same surfaces, one more go at them. The gap is still untouched.
✕ An electric toothbrush
It cleans better everywhere a brush already reaches. It still doesn’t fit in the gap.
✕ An antiseptic mouthwash
Your mouth might feel clean and your breath changes for an hour. The antiseptic also kills off the helpful bacteria your mouth needs to fight the bad ones, and reduces your saliva’s ability to neutralise acid. And a rinse doesn’t get into every gap either.
None of these get where we need them. That’s where this starts, so that’s where it has to be dealt with.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The first eight weeks, in order
1 · The first week or two
It’ll bleed more when you start flossing, not less. That’s normal and it settles if you keep up the routine. You’re touching tissue that’s already inflamed.
✓ The blood is at the same spot each time.
✓ The floss goes in without you forcing it.
2 · Two to four weeks
The gum has had a fortnight of that gap being clean, and it starts to calm down.
✓ Less blood in the sink.
✓ The edge of the gum looking firm and pale instead of red and puffy.
3 · Four to eight weeks
The bleeding should be gone, unless the gum disease is already serious – in which case, your dentist needs to hear from you. From here it’s about keeping those gaps clean by keep the routine consistent.
✓ No blood on the floss at the spot that used to bleed.

Before you buy
Why does flossing make it bleed more at first?
Because you’re cleaning tissue that’s already inflamed. It settles over the first week or two, and that’s the sign it’s working rather than a reason to stop. If you’ve been told you have periodontitis (advanced gum disease), keep your dentist in the loop.
What is included in each offer?
Balancing is one 75 ml toothpaste. The Day & Night Routine contains two 75 ml tubes: Remineralising and Balancing. Floss and mouthwash are sold separately.
How do I use the toothpaste?
Use Balancing as your daily toothpaste. With the pair, use Remineralising in the morning and Balancing at night. Keep cleaning between your teeth each day.
I’ve got a brilliant electric toothbrush. Do I still need the floss?
Yes. However good the brush is, the bristle is wider than the gap between two teeth that touch. That gap is where this starts.
How much toothpaste is included?
Each toothpaste tube contains 75 ml. The Day & Night Routine contains two tubes, 150 ml in total.
Does either offer include mouthwash?
No. Choose one Balancing Toothpaste, or the two-toothpaste Day & Night Routine. Mouthwash and floss are sold separately.
Why is there no fluoride in the toothpastes?
They use hydroxyapatite instead, the mineral your teeth are made of. In an 18-month trial a 10% hydroxyapatite toothpaste performed just as well as a fluoride one on new decay, and it comes without the dosing rules.
Can children use it?
Yes. There’s no fluoride in the toothpastes to worry about swallowing.
