Why your hydroxyapatite toothpaste tastes like chalk, and what it's costing your teeth

ORAL CARE · HYDROXYAPATITE

Why your hydroxyapatite toothpaste tastes like chalk, and what it's costing your teeth

You switched to a hydroxyapatite toothpaste for a good reason. It puts back the mineral your enamel is made of.

Then you brush with it for the first time. There's hardly any foam, and the paste tastes flat and chalky. The mint fades before you've finished brushing.

You spit, run your tongue over your teeth, and they don't feel clean. A few weeks later, the tube is half-used in a drawer, and you're back on the supermarket one.

So why does a toothpaste with such a good ingredient feel so bad to use?

What your toothpaste is missing when it doesn't foam

Without a proper foaming agent

The paste and mint oils stay in fewer spots.

With a proper foaming agent

The paste and flavour spread around your mouth.

Most supermarket toothpaste foams because of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), the same kind of detergent you'll find in most shampoo. The problem is that SLS irritates the soft lining of your mouth and can even cause mouth ulcers.

Natural toothpastes take SLS out, and that's the right call. But if your toothpaste barely foams, nothing has taken its place. A foaming agent does a lot more than make bubbles.

A foaming agent carries the mint around your mouth

The mint in toothpaste comes from plant oils, and oil doesn't mix with the water in your mouth.

A foaming agent mixes the oils in and disrupts the water’s surface tension, so the botanical oils can work across the whole mouth.

Without foam, the mint stays in a few spots and fades fast. What you taste instead is the paste itself.

A foaming agent gets the hydroxyapatite onto more of your teeth

Foam lets the paste run into narrow gaps. Without it, the paste just sits where your brush puts it.

The mineral can only settle on the surfaces the paste reaches.

Foam tells you your mouth is clean

You've learned to trust foam since you were a child. Without it, a perfectly good brush still feels unfinished, so you reach for the glass and rinse.

Signs your toothpaste is putting you off brushing

A toothpaste you don't enjoy changes how you brush, usually without you noticing:

✓ You brush faster to get the taste over with

✓ You rinse straight away, to get rid of the aftertaste

✓ Your mouth still feels unbrushed when you've finished

✓ The tube is still half full after a month

✓ You keep a normal tube nearby for when you want to feel fresh

Each of these means less hydroxyapatite on your teeth, for less time. Rinsing is the worst, because water washes the mineral off before it's done any work.

A toothpaste you don't enjoy can't do its job

A hydroxyapatite toothpaste is meant for two minutes of brushing, twice a day, with no rinsing afterwards. If the paste is unpleasant, you're much more likely to skip brushing or cut it short.

So you've been offered a bad choice. The supermarket tube is nice to use because of SLS. The natural tube left out the parts that made it nice.

You need a hydroxyapatite toothpaste that's as good to brush with as the one you gave up.

The Day & Night Routine is for adults who want natural toothpaste they enjoy using. Remineralising goes in the morning; Balancing goes at night. Both contain hydroxyapatite and xylitol.

Both formulas keep the foam and leave the SLS out.

Thick foam without SLS

Both toothpastes foam with sodium lauroyl sarcosinate. It’s a different molecule from SLS, despite the similar name, and uses an amino acid in place of a sulphate.

You get a full foam that spreads the paste over every tooth. The hydroxyapatite goes everywhere your brush goes.

Real mint from plant botanicals, everywhere you need it

The flavour comes from peppermint, thyme and lemon essential oils, with natural menthol for a cool finish. The foam spreads the fresh taste everywhere you brush.

Xylitol sweetens your toothpaste instead of sugar

Xylitol sweetens the paste and adds a cooling note that makes the mint taste fresher. It’s naturally found in many plants, and it even helps your gums and teeth by working against acid-producing bacteria.

Hydroxyapatite in both, plus paraprobiotics at night

Eēsē Remineralising Toothpaste puts the mineral back in the morning. Balancing adds more hydroxyapatite and the Paraprobiotic Complex at night, supporting your oral microbiome.

You get hydroxyapatite in both brushes, with paraprobiotics in the evening. Both toothpastes foam and taste like toothpaste should.

There's no SLS, no fluoride, no titanium dioxide, no parabens, and no artificial colours or sweeteners.
