Natural toothpaste that tastes like clay isn’t the price of going natural. It’s a missing ingredient.

ORAL CARE · HYDROXYAPATITE

Natural toothpaste that tastes like clay isn’t the price of going natural. It’s a missing ingredient.

It’s the foaming agent. Most mainstream toothpaste uses SLS, and natural brands are right to take it out. But a foaming agent does far more than make bubbles.

It spreads the paste around your mouth and carries the active ingredients with it. Take it out and put nothing proper back, and you get a toothpaste that tastes flat and leaves your mouth feeling like you haven’t brushed.

Five signs your natural toothpaste was missing it

You switched to a natural or hydroxyapatite toothpaste for good reasons. Then the tube ended up in a drawer. Does any of this sound familiar?

It barely foamed, however long you brushed.

The taste was flat or earthy, and it was gone in seconds.

It left a gritty film on your teeth.

Your mouth didn’t feel clean afterwards.

You went back to your old toothpaste, and felt guilty about it.

WHY IT HAPPENS

Foam isn’t just bubbles. It lets the cleaning happen and the taste get where it needs to.

Every toothpaste needs a foaming agent. It lets the paste spread across your teeth and into the gaps between them, instead of sitting where you put it.

It helps disrupt the bacterial coating and lifts loosened film off your teeth so you can spit it out. And it spreads the flavourful botanicals all around your mouth.

Most mainstream toothpaste uses SLS for that job. SLS is the detergent linked to mouth ulcers, so natural brands are right to take it out.

The problem is what goes in its place. Leave the foaming agent out, or swap in something weak, and the paste stays where you put it. The mint never spreads, so what you taste is the paste itself.

And there’s no lather. Lather is how surfaces get cleaned, so without it your mouth feels like you haven’t brushed at all, even when you have.

Without a proper foaming agent

The paste and mint oils stay in fewer spots.

With a proper foaming agent

The paste and flavour spread around your mouth.

So you stop using it. A tube in the drawer does nothing for your teeth, however clean its ingredient list is. And you go back to the toothpaste with the SLS in it.

A clean formula only works if you use it. What you need is the complete package: the right ingredients, in a toothpaste you enjoy using.

Why the obvious fixes don’t get you a toothpaste you’ll keep using

✕ Another natural brand

New label, same problem. If there’s no proper foaming agent in it, it’ll taste and feel exactly like the last one.

✕ Going back to your old toothpaste

It foams and it tastes right, because the SLS is back. So is everything else you switched away from.

✕ A natural one for you, a normal one for everyone else

Two tubes by the sink, and there’s a reason you’re the only person using the ‘right’ one.

✕ Making yourself finish the tube

You get to the end of it out of principle. Then you don’t buy another one.

None of them gets you a clean toothpaste you’re happy to use twice a day.

WHERE IT STARTS

Eēsē Balancing Toothpaste keeps the foam and leaves the SLS out

Eēsē Balancing Toothpaste is a complete daily toothpaste for gum and breath care. It combines hydroxyapatite and xylitol with paraprobiotics in an SLS-free formula.

For best results, use Balancing Toothpaste alongside our Remineralising Toothpaste. Remineralising contains hydroxyapatite for enamel care before the day’s food and drink.

Use Remineralising in the morning and Balancing at night for microbiome-friendly care while you sleep.

✓ Both foam properly. The foaming agent is sodium lauroyl sarcosinate. Despite the similar name, it isn’t SLS. It gives you a proper lather and spreads the paste across your teeth.

✓ It tastes of mint all the way through. Peppermint and wild mint, with a little lemon and thyme and a cool natural menthol finish, carried round your mouth by the foam.

✓ Both contain hydroxyapatite and xylitol. Eēsē Remineralising Toothpaste puts the mineral back in the morning. Balancing adds the Paraprobiotic Complex at night to support your oral microbiome.

THE EVIDENCE

Without SLS, mouth ulcers cleared up faster and hurt less

In a double-blind trial, 90 people who get mouth ulcers spent eight weeks on a toothpaste with SLS, and eight weeks on one without it. While they were on the SLS-free toothpaste, their ulcers cleared up faster and hurt less.

Both toothpastes leave out SLS, fluoride, titanium dioxide, parabens, artificial colours and sweeteners, and peroxide.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1 · Your first brush

It foams, it tastes of mint, and your mouth doesn’t feel stripped when you spit.

✓ A proper lather.

✓ A clean feeling afterwards.

2 · Two to four weeks

If you get mouth ulcers, this is when you’ll notice they clear up faster and hurt less.

✓ An ulcer that clears up sooner than you’re used to.

Before you switch

Does it really foam?

Yes. It lathers like the toothpaste you grew up with, because it has a proper foaming agent in it. It just isn’t SLS.

What’s the foaming agent, if it isn’t SLS?

Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate. It’s a natural foaming agent containing an amino acid instead of sulfate, and it’s much gentler on the gums.

What does it taste like?

Peppermint and wild mint, with a little lemon and thyme, and a natural menthol finish.

Is it natural?

Yes. It’s natural, vegan and SLS-free, and every ingredient is printed on the tube.

Will it whiten my teeth?

It polishes off surface stains, so your teeth look brighter. It doesn’t bleach.

Is there fluoride in it?

No. It uses hydroxyapatite instead, which is the mineral your teeth are made of.

Can children use it?

Yes. There’s no fluoride in it to worry about swallowing.
